Mark 3:13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him. 14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.
This passage of scripture teaches us that there are instances where informal ordination is done through the guidance of God, and as such it is just as valid as the formal ordination which takes place in churches, complete with the anointing of holy oil. The human tendency is to focus on the specifics of the literal aspects of ordination, whilst the more important spiritual aspects are overlooked. In this instance, Christ did not consult first with the religious leaders of the day, before anointing His twelve disciples, and by His own authority He ordained a devil in the form of Judas, who would later turn out to be His betrayer. Christ is not to be bound by rules and regulations, that are written in the scriptures, for His authority to do whatsoever He pleases is always to be acknowledged as of greatest importance.
In this instance, no holy oil was used, nor was there any prayer and fasting as is usually the case before ordination is done. Similarly with John the Baptist, who never received any formal ordination by church authorities, yet He was ordained to preach by God, and was filled with The Holy Ghost before he was born. Christ also was never formally ordained by human agents, neither were several other holy men of God, who received their informal ordination not from man but from God Himself. The spiritual anointing of The Holy Ghost therefore always takes precedence over any formal ordination that may be done by the church, for this is where the real anointing takes place.
However, the formal is not to be despised for it is ordained of God, and as such must be respected and practiced in an orderly manner whenever a person's name comes up for consideration. But the point for us to remember is that The Holy Ghost is not to be bound by rules and regulations, even if they are written in the scriptures. Eldad and Medad were two of the seventy elders who were called up to the mountain to receive of the spiritual anointing, but they did not go up as commanded, for they felt they were unworthy. But as the Spirit fell upon the other sixty eight who were present, He bypassed all geological restrictions and boundaries, and fell upon the two who remained in the camp, and they too began to prophesy at the same time that the others were prophesying on the mountain top. Let's read:
Numbers 11:25 And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. 26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.
Joshua's first response to the phenomena constitutes the natural human reaction, for in his mind they were ineligible because they did not come up as commanded. That may be the case from a mere legal perspective, but as stated before, The Holy Spirit is not bound by stipulated methods and formats as the human agent is, and therefore we should always make room for the working of The Spirit of God, in ways and means that may defy logical reasoning, and may even be considered unorthodox, as far as human understanding goes. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which confirms this sacred truth, and let us therefore be willing to be led by The Spirit, as God sees fit. Let's read:
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
May God add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
