The state of Florida has removed, and continues to find hundreds of skimmers at gas stations, which inflict real pain at the pump. There are also thousands upon thousands of cases where fake emails, text messages, and telephone numbers, mimicking real businesses and banks are employed to lure persons into handing over their personal information, which is then used to open accounts in the person’s name, or is sold on the dark web.
Scammers also personate the IRS, Medicare and the Social Security administration, they claim to be from police departments, from big department stores or from insurance companies, and they often employ aggressive tactics, using fear, intimidation and even the threat of arrests, or confiscation of assets, as a way to bully persons into sharing valuable info. These scammers are now using A.I voice cloning to perfectly replicate a person’s voice, including accent and tone, if the victim happens to be Caribbean.
In a most recent and brazen attempt one impersonator, pretending to be White House Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles exchanged text messages with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Then there are the sweepstakes and lottery scams, where you have apparently won a truck load of cash but you will have to pay a fee up front in order to receive the prize, which never comes in the mail, or you are required to hand over personal information before receiving the funds.
