1st Timothy 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Similarly with Laodicea. The threat to spit folks out of His mouth was meant to arouse us to repentance, not to scare persons away from the throne of grace. When we read the Bible, we must be very careful to incorporate God’s grace, mercy and loving-kindness as bedrock, foundational principles of His character in our interpretations.
Revelation 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that you might be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness does not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21 To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
When we incorporate love as the bedrock, foundational principle of all that God does, threats, warnings, and even the possibility of coming judgments, are all to be seen and understood as calls to repentance. Never are they to be interpreted as God hating us or thirsting for revenge.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
May God add His blessing to the study of His word. “Good night” and God bless!
