Judges 16:14 And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep. 15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? 16 And it came to pass, that she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death.
In this episode, it seems as if Samson's reasoning powers had become quite numb, and inoperable, for he seemed fastened in the chains of lust, where those renegade hormones apparently caused his better judgement, reason, and commonsense, to become endangered species. We believe that even if Delilah had told him that she had AIDS, and had put a 45. revolver to his head, threatening to blow his brains out, he still would have remained in that enchanted room. It's worthy of note that she used the word "Love" in referring to their relationship, a word which is too often, grossly mistaken for passion.
In our day, it has become increasingly difficult for those who are dating to tell the difference between true love, and passion, for satan has, to a great extent, succeeded in blurring the lines between the two. True love is a principle, but emotion is a feeling, one is long lasting, the other is variable. Thus, it's very important when two young adults are dating, that they be able to tell the difference, for hasty decisions are often made in the heat of the moment, after which, the two parties are forced to sing this song by U2: "I can't live, With or without you". Thus, the following godly counsel will go a long way in forestalling such tectonic failures, as those which destroyed Samson.
[A.H.] Satan's angels are keeping watch with those who devote a large share of the night to courting. The laws of health and modesty are violated. As a general thing, marriage ends all the devotion manifested during the days of courtship. These hours of midnight dissipation, in this age of depravity, frequently lead to the ruin of both parties thus engaged. Satan exults and God is dishonored when men and women dishonor themselves. The good name of honor is sacrificed under the spell of this infatuation, and the marriage of such persons cannot be solemnized under the approval of God. They are married because passion moved them, and when the novelty of the affair is over, they will begin to realize what they have done.
1st Corinthians 10:11 "Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
May The Lord add His blessing to the study of His word. God bless!
