Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
This passage of scripture teaches us the solemn truth, that there can come a time when an individual has passed the threshold of God's mercy, and whenever this takes place, it does not even make sense to pray anymore, because God will not be listening. The passage refers specifically to those who were once united with Christ, and who have experienced firsthand, the inner workings of The Holy Ghost, with undeniable evidences of His presence and power, but who for some reason or another, have made a deliberate decision to turn their backs on Christ. Whenever a situation like this occurs, there remains no more sacrifice for sin, and the repentance which is a gift from God, then becomes an impossibility.
This is exactly what happened to Esau, who for many years was blessed with God's mercies and bounties, and although he grew up in the same household as Jacob his brother, and was surrounded with the same spiritual influences, yet he resisted God's gracious overtures to save him on many different occasions. The birthright included both spiritual and temporal blessings that were to be bestowed upon the firstborn son, but Esau despised the spiritual aspect, and even viewed it as being burdensome and too restrictive. But the straw that broke the camel's back came when he despised the temporal aspect also, which would in our day translate into millions of dollars, since his father Isaac was extremely rich.
Now what do you do with a son who does no care about his father's millions, and who is willing to part with both the spiritual and temporal inheritance for a bowl of lentils? There is nothing that can be done for a person with such an attitude, because he despises even the ungodly mammon of riches, which every secular person in their right mind will crave and desire. Hence the reason why Esau passed the threshold of repentance, making it a virtual impossibility for God to reach him, and for this he is described in the Bible as being a profane person, a designation that no one wants pinned to their name. Let's read:
Hebrews 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
In our day, there are many who are living dangerously close to the same threshold that Esau crossed, and many others have already joined him, because the light of the gospel has been shining on our pathway for many, many years, yet like Esau, there are those of us who make a deliberate decision to go south, because the current of popular teaching pulls us in different directions. Others are selling their souls for a momentary sensual high, while still others have joined with the madding crowd, to trample upon God's sacred institution of marriage, simply because it is now popular to do so.
Whatever the case might be, God warns us that there is such a thing as no more grace, and if we persist in a wrong course of action, after having being enlightened and delivered from the shackles of sin, there is one verdict to be handed down, "Guilty" of the blood of Jesus Christ. To this time the world is now hastening, and thus it is imperative that as Christians, we value very highly, what Christ has done for us on the cross, so that when the chips are finally tallied, we would not be found wanting.
We therefore end with a passage of scripture which confirms to us that there is a limit to God's grace, and may we never be found trifling with His mercy that was purchased at such an infinite cost. Let's read:
Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?
May The Lord add His blessing to the study and practice of His every word. God bless!
