Genesis 39:2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
This passage of scripture teaches us one of the most sublime truths written for our instruction, for it clearly shows that the collateral blessing of God affects the ungodly in positive ways which even they themselves are sometimes moved to acknowledge. In this instance it was on account of Joseph's faithfulness, that his master, Potiphar, was tremendously blessed, because of Joseph's adherence to the word of God. This point needs to be fully understood by all Christians, for it lays upon us the responsibility of living righteously, not merely for our own good, but also for the benefit of others with whom we interact.
What is worthy of note in the passage given is that the Bible specifically outlines the reason why Potiphar was blessed, and it delineates the extent of the blessings which reached from his household into the fields. This means that the sheep and oxen became pregnant much more often, and whereas before Joseph's arrival they only produced one or two offspring, they now started producing several times the amount they normally would have given birth to, under different circumstances.
The fruit trees also began to multiply and produce as never before, in so much that there was always an abundance of oversupply, by which the other workers and members of Potiphar's household had more than enough, and to spare. All of these material blessings were granted collaterally to a man who was not a Christian by any means, for it was the very same Potiphar who later had Joseph arrested and jailed, even though it's very possible that he did so just to save face, not as a reflection of Joseph's supposed guilt, for he must have been convinced of his servant's innocence, based on his consistent characteristics.
He himself had observed that something very unusual was taking place since Joseph's arrival, and because of this he did the sensible and right thing, by placing all his possessions under Joseph's care. Thus it is when a true Christian shows up for a job and begins working for his employers, the Christian should be seen as the most valuable asset to the company, and not as a liability, for the same God who blessed and prospered the Egyptian collaterally, because of Joseph's faithfulness, will again bless individuals and corporations when His faithful people are thus employed. Let's read:
Deuteronomy 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. 8 The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
When as Christians we are true to God and faithful to duty, we thereby give to the world unmistakeable evidence of the love and kindness of God, which serves as a powerful testimony that cannot be dismissed or reasoned away, because everyone who is involved experiences the material and spiritual blessings in real time. In this way, when we open our mouths to speak about the gospel, those who were thus blessed will listen, and even though they may not then give themselves to God, yet an indelible impression is made upon their minds, the results of which we may only know in eternity.
It is therefore of the utmost importance for us to live according to the laws and principles of God's kingdom, for with many people, we are the only Jesus they will ever know, and thus we can be used of God to spread the good word of the kingdom. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which encourages us to honor God in whatsoever we do, so that His name may be honored and glorified in our lives, and in the experiences of those around us. Let's read:
Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
May God add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
