Intercessory Prayer For Political Leaders. 05/13/2015 (Evening thought)

1st Timothy 2:1  I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.

This passage of scripture teaches us that it is the sacred duty of Christians to pray for our secular and political leadership, so that the decisions made and the actions taken by them may lead to tranquility and peace, instead of turmoil and war. The apostle then certifies this duty by saying it is acceptable in the sight of God. As Christians we are not to live in a world where we ostracize ourselves from society, with the thought that whatever will be will be, and thus leave the ordinary citizenry, or the political leadership to make decisions  that can then bring on very adverse conditions.

We are all a part of God's family on this earth, and we are indeed our brothers' keeper, thus we should have a vested interest in what takes place all around us. Christians should not only be concerned with what the secular leadership of our country is doing, when our rights and privileges are directly affected, but we should also be concerned about the moral direction we are taking as a nation, for the decisions thus made by the highest courts and authorities in the land, could be a savor of life unto life, or they can otherwise eat away at the very foundations  and fabric of society as a whole.

When Daniel was brought before Nebuchadnezzar to interpret the disturbing dream he had received, which was obviously a harbinger of impending judgment, he did not just relate to him what God was going to do, but he also suggested in plain words, the right course of action to pursue, so that the punishment could be averted. This action on the part of Daniel is what Paul is referring to when he says that it is the will of God that prayer be made for kings and various governmental authorities. In other words, it's not just prayer in a vacuum he is speaking about, but intercession coupled together with proactive steps that will both warn those in authority, and also give the solutions, if haply they may see and understand the laws of cause and effect. Let's read:

Daniel 4:24  This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:  25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.  27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

In our day there are very grave decisions being made that can bring about drastic changes in the family and society as a whole, and as Christians it is our sacred duty to follow Daniel's lead by not merely praying alone, but also taking concrete steps to warn those in authority of the impending doom, if a course of evil is made the law of the land. For instance, there's a decision that pertains to gay marriage becoming law in all fifty states, that is currently before the supreme court, the highest judicial authority in the land, and it can and will affect the entire spectrum of our existence as a nation, for if it is signed into law, it will trigger very adverse effects ranging from unprecedented disasters, hurricanes, tornadoes and deadly earthquakes, to social unrest and continuous wars and bloodshed, which will take a heavy toll in lives and dollars, thus driving us to the brink of moral and financial bankruptcy.

This is what the Bible clearly states, and this is what will certainly come to pass, for the laws of cause and effect will be set in motion, and we will mourn and cry aloud when we behold the horrible disruptions and upheavals which will occur. God is not going to intervene in any way to stop the destructive forces of evil from running riot across the land, for whenever the potent spiritual law is interfered with for any reason, then the natural and physical laws of nature which fall under the jurisdiction of God's moral law, are then severely discombobulated, and the result will be ruin and mayhem of no ordinary character. This sacred truth is certified in the word of God, and will certainly come to pass if we persist in a wrong course of action. Let's read:

Leviticus 18:22  Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.  24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:  25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. 26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you.

In lieu of these dire warnings coming directly from the God of heaven, it is now incumbent upon us to do that which is right, by desisting from interfering with God's social order as it pertains to marriage and the family structure, for if as a nation we were to follow what we know is right, God will respond by lifting the various scourges that are afflicting the nation. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which cautions us about the law of sowing and reaping, for there are inevitable consequences to every decision made and to every action taken. Let's read:

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.  9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

May God add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
