Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread.
This passage of scripture, taken from what is commonly known as "The Lord's prayer" asks of God a petition that is common to all members of the human family, and it acknowledges the fact that He is our provider in everything that pertains to our sustenance and well-being. The Great God of heaven provides food and drink for all of His creatures here on planet earth, and this is done on a daily basis, with no biases to religion, ethnicity, or even political affiliation. God provides daily bread for Democrats as well as Republicans, and so called "Independents" also depend on God for their daily provisions, even though there are many people who do not acknowledge this fundamental and sacred truth. Let's read:
Proverbs 30:7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Deuteronomy 8:10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. 11 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: 12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; 13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; 14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God" ...
But the physical bread is not all that is needed for our existence, for we are both physical and spiritual in nature, and therefore the spiritual dimension of man must also be fed daily with spiritual bread, or else moral barrenness, and soul hunger will be the inevitable result. The tendency to pursue after our physical bread alone causes our life experiences to be greatly off-balanced, and creates a void that drives us to seek satisfaction in the transient and fleeting pleasures of earth.
It is because of this imbalance of chasing after the physical bread only, why many stars die young, and are given over to many hurtful indulgences. Christ addressed this problem as He conversed with the Jews and His followers about the spiritual aspect of their existence, for He saw in them an eager interest in the temporal food, but a lack-luster desire for the spiritual nourishment that would bring balance to the equation, and ultimately lead to eternal life. Let's read:
John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
But at Christ's suggestion the multitude became deeply offended, for in their minds the temporal bread is all that was needed, and many of them left that day with a deeper void and a greater imbalance, than when they first met Christ. And the same situation often occurs in our world today, where people seem to be obsessed with gaining their daily bread, whilst the things that are eternal in nature sit idly on the back-burner of our consciousness. The main focus of our attention should not be providing for our needs, because God has already promised that He will provide such things as are necessary for our sustenance. It is God's will that the Christian's life be well balanced and fine tuned, so that both aspects of our nature can be supplied with the necessary, daily nourishment, thus ensuring to us both physical and spiritual life.
We therefore end with a passage of scripture which shows us the will of God in these matters, and if for any reason there now exists a lopsided situation in our lives due to our heavy focus on the physical bread, God is both willing and able to rectify the situation by teaching us how to re-arrange our priorities, so that we can be fed and nourished with both the temporal and spiritual food. Let's read:
3rd John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
May God add His blessing to the study and practice of Hie every word. God bless!
