Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
This passage of scripture cautions us not to use the name of God in a trifling or light manner, both in profession and in speech. It is a sin to assume the name of Christ whilst deliberately walking contrary to the principles and laws of His kingdom, and it is also a sin to use God's name in common conversations, or as on expression of alarm, dismay, shock, or anger. We are currently living in an almost godless society, and the irreverent use of God's name has become quite fashionable, even amongst Christians. As a matter of fact God's name and curse words are used alongside each other in the same sentence, as if the Creator of the heavens and the earth isn't owed any respect whatsoever.
The common use of the phrase, "O.M.G." is applied for any and every purpose without any compunctions of conscience, and because satan has succeeded in dragging the name of God in the street, from Hollywood to Bollywood, the majority of us have now jumped on the band-wagon, apparently unaware that we are committing sin every time His name is used in a common or trifling manner.
When we read in the passage for today that The Lord will not hold us guiltless for the common use of His name in comedy or in anger, we must understand the nature of the guilt we are incurring, and we should also understand the serious retribution that was attached to this sacrilegious practice. Back then in the days of of the Hebrews, when a person was caught using God's name for any of the above profane reasons, the guilt that was thus incurred, if not repented of, was recompensed with punishment that was so severe, that it would cause our secular generation to recoil in horror and shudder with fear. We will now let the word of God speak for itself on this matter that has become so commonplace. Let's read:
Leviticus 24:10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp; 11 And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. 12 And they put him in ward, that the mind of the Lord might be shewed them. 13 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 14 Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. 15 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel" .......16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.
As Christians we are not to follow the secular world in habits and practices that are diabolically opposed to truth and righteousness, neither should we adopt the common slangs and derogatory speech that is so often used in Rap music and other elements of pop culture, for if we follow the worldly-minded in their ungodly habits and principles, we will also follow them down to perdition, where together with satan and his angels, all irreverence will forever cease. That's why we are given the admonition in the word of God to abstain from all appearances of evil, in thought, word, and deed, so that the name of Christ will not suffer any reproach on account of any ill-advised moves or practices on our part.
We therefore end with a passage of scripture that calls us to a much higher standard of godliness than is currently being exhibited in Christendom, for it is the will of God that all true believers should shine as lights in the world, as a city that is set on a hill. Let's read:
Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
May God add His blessing to the study and doing of His every word. God bless!
