God Is Our Refuge And Strength. 07/04/2014 (Evening thought)

Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

This passage of scripture confirms to every believing child of God that in times of difficulty, when unforeseen circumstances come upon us suddenly, The Lord will be there for us, to guide, instruct, and to deliver according to His good will. The Christian is sometimes beset by dire circumstances which call for a fulfillment of the promises made in the above passage, and though every person who lives on this earth is sorely tempted and harassed by the evil one, yet, as christians we have a sure refuge in God, as an assurance that when we go through the fire, we will not be burned, nor will the floods of life overflow us.

David discovered the truth and the meaning of this promise as he was being hunted like a wild beast by king Saul, who was bent on destroying him, just because of jealousy. In his dire extremity David had sought refuge by Samuel, and it was only because of the restraining power of the Holy Spirit why Saul was prevented from carrying out his murderous plans toward him. Yet, inspite of the displeasure of the Lord being upon him, Saul continued his unprovoked hatred and pursuit of David, to the point where David was moved to exclaim that there was just a step between his soul and death. Let's read:

Psalms 20:3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

It is at times like these, when try as we might to avert danger, that the promise of God as our refuge becomes a living reality, for man's extremity is God's opportunity, and often when there seems as if there is no way out of our perplexing circumstances, then it is that the omnipotent power of God to deliver is engaged in our behalf.

Sometimes as Christians we are struck with sudden temptations, sudden dangers, and even sudden sickness, which we could not see coming our way, and in our desperation, we should always remember to pray to God, for He is a very present help in time of trouble. We should never be deluded as to the nature of the spiritual warfare we are in, for the Bible tells us that we are engaged in a battle against unseen foes, and often, when the devil cannot succeed in getting the Christian to stumble spiritually, he then goes on to harass and annoy in the physical realm, as demonstrated in the experience of Job. This ongoing warfare is specifically targeted at those who keep the commandments of God, and therefore it is important for us to remember that there is a never-failing refuge in Christ. Let's read:

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

However, we have the assurance from God that the devil's power is restrained, and therefore he is not permitted to tempt us above what we are able to bear, by the grace of God. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which reminds us that the ongoing battle can only be won by being clad with the whole armor of God, including prayer, for the Christian wins all his battles on his knees. Let's read:

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

May God grant us His grace, so that we may be clad from the crown of our heads to the soles of our feet, for the evil days are just upon us. "Good night" and God bless!
