Prayer By Numbers. 06/06/2014 (Morning thought)

2nd Chronicles 20:20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever.

This is one of the soul-stirring experiences of God's deliverance in the lives of the Hebrews that we should never forget. It occurred when the Moabites and Ammonites were gathered together as one large army, obviously bent on the annihilation of the Jews. These ferocious tribes came up against Israel with such a huge force that king Jehoshaphat could not repel them without the direct intervention of God in their behalf.

And so it was that the king and the assembled hosts of Israel prayed like they never prayed before, and what is worthy of note is that it was not only the king, the adults and the elders who prayed, but even the little children and babies got involved, for when the hearts of God's people are united as one for a good, common cause, God hears and answers their prayers in the affirmative. Let's read:

2nd Chronicles 20:3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the Lord: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. 13 And all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

The sheer volume of the prayers that were ascending, shook the gates of heaven to the point where God took on the issue personally, and immediately dispatched legions of holy angels that excel in strength, who then unleashed a barrage of destructions against their foes, in so much that entire army was obliterated. Let's read:

2nd Chronicles 20:22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

In our day, "the Moabites and the Ammonites" are often gathered together against the Christian in the form of insurmountable hurdles and perplexities that are thrown in our pathway by the devil and his hosts.  Sometimes, without any provocation, legions of evil angels assemble at our doorstep bent on our destruction, and just like in the days of Jehoshaphat and the Hebrews, when assailed by these foes, we are to gather together as one body, to present united prayer by numbers to God for a common goal, that of deliverance, so that God's name would be glorified throughout the earth.

An let us not forget to sing and praise God during times of crisis, for just as in the days of Jehoshaphat, God's omnipotent power was engaged from the moment they started to sing. We therefore end with a promise to all who might be under the weather, or who are faced with perplexities beyond their control or resolution. Let's read:

Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.

May the Lord enable us to see beyond that which is seen, and to believe beyond that which is believable, for we serve a God who specializes in impossibilities. God bless!
