The Powers That Be. 06/22/2014 (Evening thought)

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

This passage teaches us the truth that no president, senator or ruler comes to power solely by their own might and power, but rather they are appointed as leaders by The Great God of the universe. This fact was firmly established, when God was moved to correct the ideology of Nebuchadnezzar, who mistakenly thought that it was because of his own wisdom and prowess why he was able to rule the then known world. Let's read:

Daniel 4:17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

In lieu of this fact, the Bible then teaches us that due respect and honor should be shown to those who are appointed as leaders, and the Christian who understands his obligation to God and man, will render the appropriate obedience to the laws of the land, if they do not directly conflict with the laws of God.

However, there is a trend in modern society that has become virulent, in that many people, including Christians, now take unwarranted liberties by publicly disparaging the office of the Presidency, with no regard for what the scriptures teach on this very point. When a duly elected leader comes to power, those who fall under their jurisdiction are duty bound to render obedience and respect, once they do not impose laws on the populace that are in direct violation to the law of God. And even when God's law comes under attack by those who are in authority, the Christian isn't then authorized to slander or incite revolt, but should rather take the pertinent issues to God in prayer, so that He can direct as to what actions should be taken. The reason for this counsel is given in the scriptures too. Let's read:

Romans 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

When Nebuchadnezzar tried to force the three Hebrews to bow down to his graven image, they did the right thing by refusing, but they did not do so in a disrespectful manner, nor did they embark upon character assassination, as is often the case in modern political circles. As Christians we should be careful not to adopt the standards and principles of the secular world as the rule and guide of life, but we should rather live according to the instructions given in God's word, for the scriptures were given so that we may have a clear moral compass on which to base our ideas, philosophies, decisions and consequent actions.

We therefore end with a passage of scripture which urges us to follow the example of Christ in our relations to our fellowmen and the rulers under whose temporal jurisdiction we fall. Let's read:

1st Peter 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.

May God add His blessing to the doing of His every word. "Good night" and God bless!
