Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
This passage of scripture shows us in great detail that Christ understands all sicknesses and is able to cure every known disease which afflicts mankind. In the above verses we see His ability to cure physical ailments as well as diseases of a spiritual nature, which more and more people are suffering from. The question then is, seeing that God is just a prayer away, why is it that so many have not availed themselves of the remedy that has been provided in Christ? The answer to this question lies primarily in one's disposition to believe that Christ can and will heal according to His will, if the necessary prerequisites of faith and works are present.
Jesus made reference to this fact when He stated in the synagogue that there were many lepers in Israel in the days of Elisha, and none of them were healed except Naaman, the Syrian. Let's read:
Luke 4:25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way.
The attitude manifested by this congregation reveals the fact that their minds were averse to any healing, whether physical or spiritual, for when the diagnosis of their condition was made, they attempted to slay the physician, instead of imploring Him for His remedy. This attitude precludes any healing from taking place, for we all go to the doctor to get his opinion and recommendation, but if when the family doctor gives us his diagnosis, we chase him with a machete, then he will not exercise his healing touch to get us well.
What is worthy of note in the case of Naaman, is that he also had a bad attitude when sent by the prophet Elisha to dip in the Jordan river seven times. Let's read:
2nd Kings 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. 11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.
However, the big difference with Naaman and the Jews in the synagogue is that Naaman finally obeyed and therefore was healed, while many of the Jews never did what Christ told them to do, and so they were lost.
In our day, as in the days of Naaman, the same God is ready and willing to heal all of our incurable maladies, both physical and spiritual, but the question is, will we like Naaman finally obey what He tells us, or will we like the Jews in the synagogue, get upset with Him for making the correct diagnosis? The answer to this question lies with us, and if we respond to Christ in the positive, nothing shall be impossible unto us.
We therefore end with a passage of scripture that asks us a direct question on this point, and if we respond to the entreaties and counsels of God pertaining to health and wellness, then He will be able to exercise His healing power on our behalf, according to His will. Let's read:
Jeremiah 8:21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. 22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
May our answer to this question result in the healing of our minds and physical bodies, for it is the will of God that we should prosper and be in health, even as our souls prosper. "Good night " and God bless!
