The Result Of Adam's Transgression. 12/272014 (Evening thought)

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.  7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.  8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.  9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?  10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

After the fall of Adam and Eve, very great changes came over them, beginning with nakedness, which then drove them to make for themselves aprons out of fig leaves, garments that would soon prove insufficient for their immediate, and continuing needs. Although the Bible does not specifically state that they were clothe in garments of light, yet we can safely deduce this conclusion, judging from other scriptures which speak on this specific point. For instance Elijah, when he was translated to heaven without seeing death, didn't have any further need of earthly apparel, for he was clothed within and without with the righteousness of Christ, and that's why his mantle fell to the ground. Let's read:

2nd Kings 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.  12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.  13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan.

Again, with the resurrection of Christ, we see that no earthly garments are taken to the city of God, for the disciples found the grave clothes of Christ neatly folded in the tomb where He had lain, and the soldiers who had crucified Him had already parted His earthly garments amongst themselves. God is in no need of any help from mortal man with the inferior products we so often brag about, for the redeemed saints of God, like their Master are dressed in robes of light, hence the reason why Christ left all earthly products in the tomb, where they really belong. Let's read:

John 20:1  The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.  2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.  3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.  5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.  7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.  8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

However, the nakedness that Adam and Eve suffered after transgression was not only physical, but also spiritual, for there appeared an emptiness and void in their souls, which only God alone could fill. And since that fateful day, we have tried in vain to fill that void with the fleeting pleasures and excitements of this earth, only to find the void becoming much deeper, whilst the gulf that separates us from God becomes wider, as we make futile attempts to replace the voice and the presence of God in our souls. The broken cisterns of this earth from which millions of people now drink offer only temporary satisfaction, and when the flight of superficial feeling is gone, we sink lower into the mire of despair and defeat, as a result of disappointed hopes and dreams.

That's why the tenor of the Bible is to discourage the use of man-made schemes to fill a spiritual void, such as what took place with king Solomon, for as his own history shows, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Solomon tried everything that was available back then, and in his relentless pursuit of earthly pleasures and fantasies, he drove himself almost to the point of suicide, because the lasting pleasure he sought kept eluding him, for indeed it was nowhere to be found in whatsoever this world has to offer. Let's read:

Ecclesiastes 1:2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.  12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.  14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ecclesiastes 2:1  I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.  4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:  5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:  6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees.  8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.  11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

It is a very dangerous thing to try to fill the place of God in our lives with the trash this world has to offer, and the Bible encourages each member of the human family to seek God, so that both our spiritual nakedness and our desire for lasting pleasure can be permanently satisfied in Christ. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which bears out this very point, and it is the will of God that we avail ourselves of the remedy provided in Jesus, so that the abundant life He offers can be ours today. Let's read:

Psalms 16:4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god" .... 5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.  8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.  9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.  11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

May God add His blessing to the study of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
