Luke 12:6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
This passage of scripture teaches us that the human family is of inestimable value to God, and the reason for this is because of the price that was paid for our redemption. When Jesus poured out His soul upon the cross to save us from our sins, the precious blood of God was shed in our behalf, and it is because God's life is priceless, why we have become of such high value to the God-head.
When a dealer goes to the auction to purchase a car, he has several decisions to make before he spends his money, and one of the main considerations is whether or not the vehicle in question is worth the investment. Several years ago such a situation occurred, when many antique cars were being sold on the auction block after a collector of these vehicles went into receivership. Many of the cars that were thus put up for sale were in need of repairs, and as the prospective buyers mulled whether or not to make a purchase, the recurring question was what can be done to the vehicle that will greatly increase its value, so as to make the purchase worthwhile.
These are the questions that were under consideration as the God-head discussed the salvation of man, for we were dead in our sins, being sold to satan through the sin of our first parents. And so, the main issue was whether or not it was worth it to make the investment in our salvation because of the price that had to be paid for our redemption, and there and then the decision was made that it would be worth the while, not merely because of our value at the time, but because of what God could do with us after making the purchase through His Son Jesus Christ.
Many people do not understand this point, and because of this a very low value is placed on human beings, in some cases even ranking us lower than the beasts that are a lower form of creation, hence the reason why Jesus made the contrast in the above passage by stating unequivocally that we are of more value than many sparrows. This point is also reiterated in the following passages of scripture that we may have a clearer understanding of the value of the human family in the sight of God. Let's read:
1st Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
Psalms 72:14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
In our day there are those who shed the blood of many innocents on a daily basis without any compunctions of conscience, and there are many others who value the temporal things of this world more than the lives of their fellowmen. This pagan mindset can be seen in the way terrorist groups slaughter thousands of men, women, and children for no valid reason, and the same mindset is also apparent in the way the that money is held by many to be of more value than people.
During the financial meltdown of recent years, the CEO of a certain corporation realized that his investments had gone missing in action, and one evening after bidding his employees good night, he remained at his private office and shot himself in the head, because of the heavy financial loss that was looming.
But God does not take the life of human beings lightly, and according to the Bible, He is not even willing that the wicked should perish, but that all should come to repentance. This Godly sentiment is echoed in words of solemn pathos throughout the scriptures, and it sheds great light on how we in turn should value the souls of our fellowmen. Let's read:
Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
A very solemn responsibility therefore rests upon the shoulders of every true Christian, to not only rightly value the lives of our friends, neighbors, co-workers and peers, but also to share the gospel of God's salvation with them, letting others know what has been done for them by God, and how they can be saved by the inestimable blood of Jesus Christ. We therefore end with a passage of scripture which demonstrates the work that God is willing and able to perform in every heart, and it is His will that all of us should avail ourselves of His saving grace, provided through Christ. Let's read:
Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
May God add His blessing to the study and practice of His word. "Good night" and God bless!
