Biblical Methods Of Staying Fit. 10/28/2014 (Evening thought)

Proverbs 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

This passage of scripture outlines for us in precis form the methods by which we can achieve good health and length of days, for it is God's will that we all prosper and be in health, even as our souls prosper. The verses begin by instructing us to keep God's law and all of His commandments, then they move on to trust in God as being indispensable to health and longevity. Some people erroneously believe that the laws of God are only spiritual in nature, and therefore have absolutely nothing to do with how we treat our bodies.

This belief thus forms a disconnect between the spiritual and the physical aspects of our being, which is absolutely not the case, because man is comprised of both physical and spiritual components as an indivisible whole, and therefore whenever the laws of God are trampled upon or disregarded, there is an immediate and ongoing effect on our physical frame, which if left to run its course, can greatly reduce health and long life. Let's read:

Deuteronomy 7:11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them. 15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee.

However, because of the constraints of time and space we can only present two of the many features that are given in The Lord's fitness program, and if we were to cooperate with Him in the implementation of these and the other methods given in scripture, we will be on our way to enjoying good health and length of days.

One of the Biblical methods that are included in the Biblical fitness program is walking, or any safe aerobic activity such as mountain climbing, running, and swimming amongst others. As soon as the children of Israel left the land of Egypt, The Lord put them on a vigorous walking program, so that the poisons and fats that they had ingested on account of the Egyptian diet, could be removed from their bodies. The Bible tells us that the Hebrews wandered in the desert for forty years, and estimates put their travels on foot at several thousand miles.

The prophet Elijah was also accustomed to aerobic activity, for after he had been granted the victory on mount Carmel and the Lord was about to send rain on the earth, he ran with the horses of Ahab's chariot from the mountain top into the city. Then again, because of the death threats of Jezebel, he was moved to run from her for a distance of almost 90 miles, a physical feat that most of us would not even dare to attempt. Let's read:

1st Kings 18:45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

1st Kings 19:2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree".....

And Jesus Christ also did a tremendous amount of walking and mountain climbing as He traveled from city to city, teaching and healing the people of their various diseases, and also whenever He departed into a mountain to pray. Let's read:

John 7:1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

Matthew 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

Another feature of The Lord's fitness program is diet, for He removed the eating of flesh foods to a large extent from His people so that the health and healing which only He alone can give, could be implemented and sustained through cooperation with Him. Everything that is accomplished both in the spiritual and physical realms, is achieved through cooperation with God, and therefore He gave them a meatless diet to compliment what He was going to do for them internally, even though at that time they did not fully understand the reasons why He changed their edibles. Let's read:

Exodus 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full" ..... 4 Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

This bread was the "Manna" that was rained down from heaven each day, and which by all accounts contained all of the protein, vitamins, minerals, and omega threes in one balanced formula, thus nourishing their bodies and supplying the needed energy to walk for many miles in the desert without getting tired, this according to the scriptures. Let's read:

Psalms 105:1  O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. 24 ... "he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies. 37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

Many people, even amongst Christians are at a loss to understand the providences of God as it pertains to staying fit, and many others do not realize that God is more practical in His instructions than is commonly thought. When the Biblical methods of staying fit are put into practice on a daily basis, the result will be good health and length of days, for The Lord who created us always knows what is best for His children. We therefore end with a passage of scripture that confirms this sacred truth through the life of Moses, who climbed to the top of Mount Pisgah unassisted, at 120 years of age, and it is the will of God that in our own lives, the necessary changes and reforms should begin without delay, for they will result in tremendous blessings to us and our families. Let's read:

 Deuteronomy 34:1  And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the Lord shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan, 7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
