The "Big Bang" Theory. Sabbath Afternoon. 01/28/2017.

The “Big Bang” theory, which is now taught in most schools, seeks to account for the formation, and the expansion of the universe, beginning with a colossal explosion, which then set in motion, the formation of sub-atomic particles, and later on, simple atoms. Now, according to this theory, large clouds of these original elements later combined through the force of gravity in halos of dark matter, forming the stars and galaxies we see today. This, in a nutshell is the Big bang theory, which as stated before, attempts to account for the formation of our world, and the universe.

The Bible however, gives a quite different account of how the universe, and our planet came to be, and sums it up in one short verse given in the first book of Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”. Over the years, many people have sought to explain creation, and the big bang theory using science, but today we will explore the reasoning behind the theory, so that it may be followed to its logical conclusion.

There are certain fundamentals with this school of thought which must be highlighted, for when they are properly observed, will cause us to be gravely concerned, if proven true. [1] According to the big bang theory, the formation of the universe was an accident that just happened, without any intelligent supervision or input. This is the foremost element in the ideology, which scares the daylights out of me, simply because of how it happened, ….. “Bang”.

Accidents do happen, so if this were true, it is quite possible that another accident could occur at any time, without prior warning, and without planning. The possibility of such an occurrence on this scale makes for a very uncertain and capricious future, because we may wake up one morning, and “Bang” new creatures, or “little green men” can appear out of nowhere, since, as the big bang theory suggests, colossal incidents, which can change the course of history and nature as we know it, can occur without any intelligent input or supervision.

Thus the idea of an accident is the core concept at the foundation of the big bang theory, and if, as is commonly accepted, we came here by accident, we may die by accident, which leads us to an important second, observation about the theory.
[2] The absence of intelligence, and intention. If, as is purported, this colossal accident occurred merely by chance, then the conclusion is that there was no intelligent input, or supervision. The idea that there was no intelligence, and intention, is quite contrary to conventional, scientific modes of thought, which always seek a reason for everything. For instance, many parents have told their kids that Santa Claus comes down the chimney at Christmas time, and delivers his gifts in stockings, around the Christmas tree, and then leaves without a trace.

But they will never say, bang the gifts appeared out of nowhere, without intelligent input, or intention. And science will not accept that explanation, for it will conclude that someone must have put the gifts there, intentionally. This issue of a person takes us to our third observation about the big bang theory.

[3] The absence of a Person. The big bang theory, as well as the theory of evolution both stress the non-involvement of a person, but rather the out-working of natural laws without interference from a Person. Now, if we were to go with this line of reasoning it’ll be virtually impossible to account for the intricate working of the human mind, complete with abilities such as critical thinking, judgment, and the ability to differentiate between right, and wrong, as well as the ability to dream.

It’s very difficult to believe that all of these abilities just happened as a result of an accidental explosion, which was void of intelligence and intention. And in addition to this, we have the recurrence of the four seasons of the year, which run their courses at the scheduled, opportune time, to cause fruit, grain and vegetation to bud in the spring, and produce in the summer. The scripture states unequivocally, that behind all the systematic working of nature, stands a Majestic, Omnipotent, and loving God who orders nature, and the laws of nature intentionally for the good of His people. Let’s read:

Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over all the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed.

Then there is the issue of time which affects every person. Science confirms that our month is a unit of time, based on the revolution of the moon around the earth, a period of about 29.53 days. Science also confirms that our day is a unit of time, based on one complete revolution of the earth around the sun. That’s all well and good!

But where did our seven-day week come from, and how is it that we just “accidentally” ended up with 7? There are no orderly movements in the heavens, or even in the earth which mark off a specific period of seven days, so, if an intelligent Person was never involved, how then did our calendars get to seven days in one week? Why not eight, or twelve, since according to science it’s all by accident? This takes us two investigations on time as narrated by the Bible writers, in which everyone living on the planet at the time, was affected.

Five nations have consulted together, and they have decided to wipe the Hebrew nation off of the map. And Joshua, as Israel’s visible leader is drawn into battle. His army fights against the enemies, but they soon realize that they are running out of daylight hours, and so he petitions the God of heaven to do the unthinkable, by apparently halting the normal rotation of the earth around the sun, so that the daylight hours could be extended, and so that they could take care of unfinished business, and the rest is history. Let’s read:

Joshua 10:12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man.

2nd Kings 20:1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
2 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying,
3 I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out
into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.
6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the Lord the third day?
9 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
10 And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.

Some estimates have put the equivalent time of ten degrees, as being approximately forty minutes. Now if such an occurrence was to take place in the 20th century it would produce tremendous ripple effects, for bank employees would have to work extra, thus triggering overtime pay the banks had not intended. We ourselves, usually put our Face-book friends on notice, before doing our weekly Bible starting at  5:00 pm est. Now, if after sending out the notice at 4:20 pm, we arrived twenty minutes later, only to find the church clock reading 4:00 pm, we would be gravely concerned. And so, it was no small miracle which then took place, but something major, which pertained to time here on earth, and which did not pass unnoticed by surrounding nations. Let’s read:

2nd Kings 20:11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.
12 At that time, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.

[Prophets & Kings pp.344] In the fertile valleys of the Tigris and the Euphrates there dwelt an ancient race which, though at that time subject to Assyria, was destined to rule the world. Among its people were wise men who gave much attention to the study of astronomy; and when they noticed that the shadow on the sundial had been turned back ten degrees, they marveled greatly. Their king, upon learning that this miracle had been wrought as a sign to the king of Judah that the God of heaven had granted him a new lease of life, sent ambassadors to Hezekiah to congratulate him on his recovery and to learn, if possible, more of the God who was able to perform so great a wonder.

Therefore, the choices we have as it pertains to the creation of the universe, our planet, and indeed our own selves are one out of only two: We can believe that an accident produced, and set in motion all the things we accept as normal and recurring, or we can believe that intelligence, intention, supervision, and ongoing control of natural laws, is the work of The Supreme God of the universe. If however, we were to choose the latter, the least we can do is to get to know Him, for which child does not desire to know his/her parents?

We therefore end with a passage of scripture which summarizes the creation of the universe, and our world, teaches us that God is much nearer to us than many people know, and also teaches us the appropriate response to Him, since we are held responsible for our choices and actions. Paul is addressing not only the people of ancient Athens, but rather the inhabitants of the entire world, who need to know that a loving God has done, and is doing everything for our best good, through Jesus Christ. Let’s read:

Acts 17:23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent:

We sincerely hope and pray, that as we weigh the evidences of creation, versus the mere theory of evolution, that we will respond appropriately, by at least getting to know more of the God of the Bible, for in Him our eternal future, and our well-being are centered.

                                                                  God bless!
